India’s First Nature-Themed Airport Terminal: What Makes It Unique?

What truly sets this terminal apart is its nature-inspired design, making it the first airport terminal in India to follow a dedicated nature theme.

The design is inspired by Assam’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, under the theme “Bamboo Orchids.”

Key highlights include:

  • Use of nearly 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced Northeast bamboo
  • Kaziranga-inspired green landscapes
  • Traditional japi motifs and the iconic one-horned rhino symbol
  • 57 orchid-inspired columns reflecting Assam’s Kopou flower

One of the most striking features is the “Sky Forest”, which houses nearly one lakh indigenous plants, offering arriving passengers a forest-like, immersive experience inside the terminal itself.

Smart Technology and Passenger-Friendly Features

Along with its unique design, the terminal also sets new standards in technology and passenger convenience. Some key features include:

  • Full-body scanners for faster and non-intrusive security checks
  • DigiYatra-enabled contactless travel
  • Automated baggage handling systems
  • Fast-track immigration facilities
  • AI-driven airport operations for smoother traffic management

Together, these features aim to deliver a seamless, secure, and efficient travel experience for passengers.

PM Modi Calls It a Major Boost for Assam

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi described the new terminal as a major boost to Assam’s infrastructure.

“I will reach Guwahati, Assam, tomorrow, 20th December. In the afternoon, the new terminal building of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport will be inaugurated. This is a major boost to Assam’s infrastructure. Increased capacity means better Ease of Living and a boost for commerce as well as tourism,” the Prime Minister said.

He also shared glimpses of the newly built terminal, highlighting its modern design and scale.
